Is Farmer's Market Produce Healthier?

It's a discussion that has been going on for years: is farmer's market produce healthier than what you can find in the grocery store? The answer to this question largely depends on your definition of "healthier."

If you are looking for locally grown produce with no pesticides, then yes- it is likely more healthful. However, if you want fruits and vegetables that are free from foodborne illnesses like E. coli or Salmonella, then the answer may be different.

One way to address this question would be by comparing studies done at each location; however, since these locations vary so much there isn't enough data available to draw any conclusions as yet. Another approach could involve asking farmers themselves about their methods for protecting against foodborne illness.

The produce industry is a difficult one to regulate, mainly because it's so hard to know what happens between the time that food leaves the farm and arrives on your grocery store shelves.

The price of this type of food does seem quite expensive at first glance - but when you think about how much money you’re saving by not eating out as often, that might be worth it for some people. Not only will your body thank you (and so will your wallet) if you switch over to buying groceries in-season from farmers markets instead of supermarkets, but chances are good that your family would appreciate the change too!
